The story
Eva Rüttgers, a young teacher in a small German provincial town, becomes engaged to educator Dr. Kurt Hiller. By chance, she discovers that Hiller has a four-year-old illegitimate son, Gustav, living with foster parents. Eva secretly visits them and brings the child back to town, intending to surprise her fiancé. But Hiller fails to recognize his son, and townspeople assume Gustav is Eva’s illegitimate child, whom she concealed and plans to bring into her marriage. The rumor puts Eva’s position as a teacher at risk.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Eva Rüttgers is a young teacher in a small German provincial town. She gets engaged to the educator Dr. Kurt Hiller. By chance, she learns that Hiller has a four-year-old illegitimate son. She secretly travels to the foster parents of little Gustav and returns to town with him. What was meant to be a surprise for her fiancé turns into a scandal. Hiller does not recognize his own son and, like the rest of the town, believes Gustav is Eva’s illegitimate son, whom she deliberately kept secret and now intends to bring into the marriage. Eva is eventually supposed to be dismissed from her teaching position. This prompts the students to take action. They do not want to lose their popular teacher, and their protests lead to the misunderstanding being cleared up.
