The story

After the Second World War, a train leaves Stockholm for bombed-out Berlin carrying a varied group of passengers. Among them are a cheerful but perpetually unlucky soldier who travels with crutches and bruises, a failed writer whose attempts to help go wrong, and an adulterous couple. The journey is overseen by a zealous conductor trying to maintain order as the passengers’ circumstances and intentions threaten to turn the trip into chaos. The plot presents the train as a meeting place for people whose personal troubles and conflicting aims intersect during the journey.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Second World War is over, and a train departs from Stockholm for bombed-out Berlin. Many different people meet on the train: a perpetually unlucky soldier with crutches and bruises, who keeps hurting himself but is just as cheerful; a gay, psychotic man who had a terrible childhood and is travelling with his partner, who was drawn exclusively to men because of misogyny; a failed writer who wants to do good but fails, and whose “helpfulness” harms the unlucky soldier; and an adulterous couple whose male partner plans to murder his wife during the train journey. All of this is overseen by the zealous conductor, who tries to keep order amid the chaos. Most of the film was shot at and around Avesta Krylbo railway station.
