The story
Around 1912, student riots and calls for democracy shake a fictional country somewhere south of Sweden. The regime, led by Interior Minister Joel Birkman, brutally crushes the revolt and arrests rebel leader Demodov, who is expected to face trial and probably be sentenced to death. Birkman then plans to spend the summer at his country estate with his immediate family. His newly hired bodyguard, Jacob, appears to be there to protect him, but Jacob is secretly connected to the defeated democratic movement and has another mission: to kill the minister.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The time is around 1912. The setting is somewhere south of Sweden. In a fictional country, student riots are underway; calls for democracy and the overthrow of the old regime ring out. The revolt is brutally and ruthlessly crushed by the regime, led by Interior Minister Joel Birkman. At the same time, the rebel leader Demodov is arrested and imprisoned. He is to face trial in the autumn, followed by a sentence—most likely the death penalty. But first, the interior minister is to spend his summer holiday at his country estate, together with his immediate family and his newly hired bodyguard, Jacob. However, the bodyguard turns out to be secretly involved in the recently suppressed democratic movement, and his real mission is to do the opposite of protecting his charge: to assassinate him.
