The story

The film opens with a news bulletin (from Dougal Stevenson) announcing the sudden return of PM Volkner from urgent Middle East oil embargo talks to respond to New Zealand's worst union dispute "since 1951". A general strike looms with street brawls and petrol rationing, and Volkner promises a hardline response with new emergency legislation. After Smith's marriage to Gloria falls apart after her affair with a man named Bullen, Smith leaves the city with no plans, driving out to the isolated Coromandel Peninsula.
