The story
In 2002, Lainey and Jake meet at Columbia University and lose their virginity to each other. Years later, after Lainey ends a long-term relationship following an affair, she attends a sex addicts meeting where she reconnects with Jake. Both struggle with commitment issues and decide to become friends, establishing a 'safe word' to manage their sexual tension. As they confide in one another about their dating lives, they navigate various romantic interests and personal hurdles while trying to maintain their platonic boundary.

In 2002, Lainey and Jake meet at Columbia University and lose their virginity to each other. Years later, Lainey breaks up with her boyfriend Sam after an affair with Matthew. At a sex addicts meeting, she reconnects with Jake. They agree to be friends, using the safe word 'mousetrap' to handle sexual tension. While they become close friends, they both date other people—Lainey sees Chris while Jake dates Paula. Eventually, they spend a night together and realize they are in love but are afraid to act on it. After Lainey moves to Michigan and Jake dates Paula, a series of events leads to Jake being arrested after a confrontation with Matthew. Jake calls Lainey from jail to confess his love. Finally, after Lainey blackmails Matthew into dropping a lawsuit against Jake, the two rush off to be married.
