A journalist and a widowed architect find their lives intertwined through a series of chance encounters and a child's desperate plea for his father's happiness.
The story
After the death of his wife, architect Sam Baldwin moves to Seattle with his young son, Jonah. During a holiday, Jonah calls a national talk radio show to help his father find love, leading to a massive outpouring of support from listeners. Among them is Annie Reed, a reporter in Baltimore who is engaged but feels something is missing. Inspired by a classic romance film, Annie writes a letter to Sam proposing they meet in New York City on Valentine's Day. Although she initially hesitates to send it, the letter is mailed by a friend, setting the stage for a fated connection between the two strangers.
