The story
In the summer of 1991, 14-year-old friends A.J. Carter and Moose Miller are looking for ways to make money in their small town of Nebraska City. After their homemade beer-making operation is shut down by their parents, they set their sights on winning the rights to operate the snack shack at the local community pool. They successfully outbid others at a city council auction, using A.J.'s college savings. The business proves immediately successful, but the boys soon face complications as they navigate the arrival of a new neighbor, the complexities of teenage romance, and the pressures of their growing business.

In 1991, 14-year-old friends A.J. Carter and Moose Miller pursue various money-making schemes in Nebraska City. After their parents shut down their beer-making operation, they win the rights to run the local community pool's snack shack at a city council auction. While the business is successful, the boys deal with local bullies and the complications of a new neighbor, Brooke. A.J. and Moose both develop feelings for Brooke, leading to tension between the friends. After a series of misunderstandings and a physical altercation, the two friends are forced to separate their shifts. The status quo changes when a mutual friend, Shane, is killed in a car accident. The shared grief brings A.J. and Moose back together as they plan for the future. Shortly after, Brooke is reassigned to Germany and leaves the town, leaving A.J. and his father to share a moment of reflection.
