When a preacher and his wife take in a street musician, the encounter reminds him of the sexuality he has long suppressed.

The story

Johannes Klare is a charismatic preacher who leads a free church in Stuttgart with his wife, Lydia; they are role models in their Bible-believing community. As an act of charity, they take in Simon, a drug-addicted street musician, care for him, and hope to bring him into their congregation. The church regards Simon’s openly lived homosexuality as sinful and seeks to “cure” it through faith. Simon’s situation reminds Johannes of the homosexuality he has suppressed since his school days.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Johannes Klare is a charismatic preacher at a free church in Stuttgart, which he leads together with his wife, Lydia. Both are role models within the Bible-believing community. As a matter of course and an act of charity, they take in Simon, a drug-addicted street musician, care for him, and hope to integrate him into their congregation. Simon’s openly lived homosexuality, which the free church considers sinful, is to be “cured” with the help of faith. Johannes, however, is reminded of the homosexuality he has suppressed since his school days. When he finally gives in to his desire, he is plunged into conflict with his wife, his faith, his conscience, and his role in the congregation. He struggles to find his way back to his life and also gains Lydia’s support in doing so. But he must learn to accept himself, and also that he can live out his faith only if he withstands the conflict with the orthodox believers in his church.
