The story
Edward Collin, a wealthy heir living in a luxurious villa in Cannes, longs for a simple life and fears being loved only for his money. After learning from his friend Marcel that his fiancée Alice has a lover, Edward turns away from her and the jet set. He takes refuge with Marcel in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, confiding his deception only to his loyal servant, Alfons. There he meets Ninette, a waitress, and pretends to be penniless to discover whether she likes him for himself. When she helps him find work, Edward’s efforts to conceal his identity become increasingly complicated, especially after he takes a job in his own hotel.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Alfons Rappert is the loyal servant of Edward Collin, a wealthy heir who lives in a luxurious villa in Cannes. But Collin has a problem—what he really wants is to live a simple life, and above all, not to be loved merely for his money. When his friend Marcel, a painter, tells him that his fiancée Alice already has a lover before the wedding, Edward turns his back on her and on the jet set. He takes temporary refuge with Marcel in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and lets only his servant Alfons in on the ruse. Edward meets Ninette, a waitress, and wants to make sure she likes him for himself, so he pretends to be penniless. But when Ninette finds him a job, things get complicated. Pretending to be a parking attendant or a hotel floor waiter always carries the risk that a famous millionaire will one day be recognized for who he is—especially since he starts work as a floor waiter in his own hotel. Edward is accused of theft, and his unfaithful ex-fiancée Alice naturally does not give up so easily either. Edward is forced to save himself with one excuse and white lie after another. In the end, however, all the situations and misunderstandings are resolved to everyone’s satisfaction. Edward and Ninette marry and, over time, become the happy parents of eight children, for whom Alfons gets to serve as caretaker and family uncle.
