Full plot (contains spoilers)
Amrita, a woman from Berlin, lives with her children, twelve-year-old Lili and nine-year-old Fabian, in a Sannyasin commune in Kreuzberg. When Amrita’s current lover, Siddharta, inherits an old farm in the Upper Bavarian village of Talbichl, the community decides to move there and open a therapy center. The conservative villagers regard the newcomers with suspicion; the newcomers set themselves apart with their orange clothing, meditation rituals, and sexual openness. Lili has lost her friends because of the move, finds herself caught between opposing sides in Talbichl, and becomes an outsider at school. As a result, she adopts the villagers’ clothes and rituals there, while continuing to live the alternative lifestyle of her commune at home. Her little brother Fabian, by contrast, proves more of a hindrance as she tries to find new friends, since he continues to share his mother’s rejection of the locals. Lili, however, feels neglected by Amrita, who is constantly preoccupied with her personal problems and is attracted to Prem Bramana, a confidant of Bhagwan. Siddharta reacts to this relationship with jealousy, as does Gopal, a member of the commune, when his new crush, Leela, gets involved with the local postman. At a village festival, tensions between the different groups and individuals erupt into open conflict. The orange-clad commune encounters not only the other villagers there, but also Lili and Fabian, who are making music with the people of Talbichl in traditional Bavarian dress. When Prem Bramana offers Amrita the chance to follow him to Oregon and send the children to a children’s commune in England, Lili flees to the village mayor’s wife, causing further complications. But eventually, the opposing sides grow closer to one another.
