Full plot (contains spoilers)
Germany in the 1930s. A young woman from a progressive bourgeois family travels with her husband, Rolf, to Shanghai, where she meets Dr. Richard Sorge and decides to become a Soviet intelligence agent. After training at an intelligence school near Moscow, she is given the codename “Sonya” and sent on her first mission to Manchuria with Comrade Ernst. They fall in love, and she becomes pregnant, but when she receives new orders to go to Poland, she leaves him. For successfully carrying out her mission in Poland, she receives the Order of the Red Banner in Moscow and a new assignment—this time in Switzerland, where she obtains information valuable to the Soviet Union about Hitler’s preparations for war. To avoid being handed over to Germany, she marries an Englishman and leaves for Great Britain, seeing Rolf and Ernst for the last time as they, too, set off on a mission.
