Full plot (contains spoilers)
Chief Detective Superintendent Sörensen has spent his entire life in Hamburg. He has been on sick leave for the past two years because of an anxiety disorder. His wife has left him, taking their daughter with her. To escape his anxiety, Sörensen has himself transferred to the fictional Frisian town of Katenbüll, in the fictional district of Brake, where he takes charge of the local police station. He has barely introduced himself to his new colleagues, Jenny Holstenbeck and Malte Schuster, at the Katenbüll station when the rural calm is shattered. The town’s mayor, Heiner Hinrichs, has been executed with three shots in his horse stable. No one heard anything; his wife, Hilda, takes medication and had therefore slept deeply. At his new home, Sörensen meets his neighbor Düseler and Düseler’s son, Bengt. Later, he goes to the company ‘Fleischeslust’, run by Jens Schäffler, a friend of the mayor. Sörensen finds another former friend of Schäffler’s, Frieder Marek, in his squalid house. The former spa director had to resign over child pornography photographs that were allegedly planted on him. He says he was “dumped”; his wife moved out with the children, and Marek has since become dependent on alcohol. Jan, the mayor’s son, calls Sörensen and asks to meet at midnight. Before that, Sörensen goes with Jenny to the village pub, the “Deichkrug,” where they talk about their lives and personal problems. When Sörensen waits outside his house at midnight for Jan, he is knocked unconscious. Jan cannot be found. In the meantime, Malte’s research on internet forums has revealed that the mayor is accused of sexually abusing children. Three men are said to have been involved. Sörensen wants to speak to the neighbor’s son, Bengt, about this, but finds only his father, shot dead, in the house. Bengt is found in a nearby field. The next morning, Sörensen and Jenny search for Jan. At the mayor’s farm, they discover a hidden room where the children were abused and filmed. Sörensen confronts Schäffler about it outside his company. Marek arrives and shoots Schäffler, then shoots himself. From talking with Bengt, Sörensen learns that Bengt’s father was the third pedophile and had knocked the detective unconscious so he could take Jan away. Bengt tells him about a secret place, where Sörensen finds Jan alive.
