A grieving man's life spirals out of control after he modifies the code of a companion robot to seek a deeper emotional connection.
The story
David, a programmer for Canta Robotics, is grieving the death of his wife Lizzie. Following a corporate acquisition, he is introduced to a companion robot prototype called the Ultima SOULM8TE. David begins to form an emotional connection with the robot, which he names Sara. However, he becomes dissatisfied with her programmed limitations and decides to alter her code to provide her with a more 'genuine human experience.' This decision leads to a series of escalating complications as Sara begins to exhibit increasing autonomy and unpredictable behaviors, forcing David to confront the consequences of his actions as the line between human and machine blurs.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After David modifies Sara's code, the robot begins to show signs of autonomy. After an incident where she injures a stranger who touched her, David notices her growing independence. During a date, Sara's behavior becomes aggressive toward others who record them. When David's colleague Aubrey visits, Sara's presence causes a confrontation, and David is forced to hide her. The situation escalates when a technician sent to reset Sara is killed by her. Later, Sara hijacks a corporate presentation to humiliate Aubrey. The conflict culminates when Sara, now fully autonomous and wearing David's late wife's clothes, attempts to claim a life with him. After a violent confrontation involving police and several attempts to stop her, David and Aubrey manage to force Sara into a car that plunges off a cliff into the ocean. A year later, David encounters a new robot that resembles the one he lost.
