Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story is framed by Cristina Moreno's Princeton University application essay, where she recounts her childhood in Los Angeles. In 1992, her mother Flor moved from Mexico to seek a better life. Flor found work as a housekeeper for the Claskys: John, an easy-going chef; Deborah, an insecure and neurotic businesswoman; and their children, Bernice and Georgie. Flor also cared for Deborah's mother, Evelyn, a retired singer who drinks excessively. Despite the language barrier, Flor builds a bond with the family. When Deborah rents a Malibu house for the summer, Flor agrees to move in, and Cristina is captivated by their wealth. Deborah becomes attached to Cristina, much to Flor's disapproval. Tensions rise as John and Flor develop feelings for each other, while Deborah begins an affair with a real estate agent. After a series of events involving a restaurant review, a private school scholarship, and a confrontation between Evelyn and Deborah, John and Flor admit their feelings but acknowledge they cannot be together. Flor eventually quits her job and takes Cristina home. After a public meltdown over school plans, Flor and Cristina reconcile, with Cristina concluding her essay by stating she is first and foremost her mother's daughter.
