An otherworldly sect returns from seclusion to strip men of the traits it believes fuel aggression, ambition, and jealousy.

The story

In 1930s America, a wealthy, eccentric sect rejects love and regards artistic creation as evil, seeking ecstasy through total sexual freedom. After its members disappear following a 1937 conference in New York, some suspect they were extraterrestrials. Years later, a journalist discovers them in a secret South American forest refuge. Spermula and her companions then return to civilization aboard an enormous ship, hoping to spread peace and freedom by “spermulating” men—removing what they believe is the sexual essence behind aggression, ambition, and jealousy. They take up residence in a mansion among a mayor, his troubled household, and other neighbors.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the United States in the 1930s, a sect made up of rich, eccentric libertines who rejected all ideas of love considered artistic creation a form of evil and tried to find the ecstasy of pure being in total sexual freedom. After a conference they convened in New York in 1937, all the sect’s members disappeared. Some people assumed they were extraterrestrials in disguise. Years later, a journalist found them in a secret place in the forests of South America, but they were never heard from again. Out of the mist, an enormous ship floats across the night sky. Inside, Spermula and her companions are returning to civilization to bring their message of peace and freedom to a world gone mad by “spermulating” men—that is, stripping them of their sexual essence, which causes aggression, ambition, and jealousy. They move into a mansion whose neighbors include the town mayor, his unhappy and abused wife, his assistant, and a widow. Spermula and her companions set in motion events that culminate in an orgy. The women are corrupted by this contact with the outside world, and their beautiful leader, Spermula, falls in love with a young artist and sacrifices her immortality for a night of passion with him.
