A Dakota chief resists the encroachment of gold seekers and a scheming businessman on his people’s land.

The story

In 1875, a peaceful encounter in the Black Hills brings Dakota chief Far-Seeing Falcon face to face with two gold prospectors. He predicts that more prospectors will arrive, and his people divide over whether to move to a reservation or remain on their land. As newcomers arrive by railroad, Falcon finds a herd of slaughtered buffalo and attacks a train, but must retreat. A businessman named Bludgeon, Falcon’s bitter enemy, claims the gold-bearing land and sells plots to newcomers and army officers. When violence against prospectors is blamed on the Indians, Bludgeon stirs the people of Tanglewood toward a confrontation with the tribe.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

1875. A peaceful encounter takes place in the Black Hills, a foothill region of the Rocky Mountains, between the Dakota chief Far-Seeing Falcon and two gold prospectors. The chief predicts an invasion by more gold prospectors. At the council meeting that follows, the tribe splits. One group wants to move to a reservation, while the group led by Far-Seeing Falcon remains on its land. As more gold prospectors are already arriving by railroad, Falcon discovers a herd of slaughtered buffalo. Without hesitation, he attacks a Union Pacific train but is forced to retreat. The businessman Bludgeon is also aboard; he and Falcon are bitter personal enemies. Bludgeon claims to own the land containing the gold deposits and sells plots to newcomers and army officers. He has local gold prospectors driven away. When a prospector and three of his men are killed in the process, he blames the Indians. He incites the people of Tanglewood to attack and kill the Indians in their village. Unaware that the tribe has split, they attack only the group that had wanted to move to the reservation. Falcon then attacks Tanglewood and burns the town down. The army intervenes and finds itself compelled to fight the Indians. Falcon faces the battle, partly to give his now reunited tribe a head start, and partly to exact revenge on Bludgeon. The film’s dramatic climax is Bludgeon’s death after he falls from a cliff. There is a sequel, White Wolves.
