The story

Drawing on access to internal police information from his active service, he finds clues pointing to Sharif Nader, a possible mastermind believed to be in Morocco. He plans to shoot Nader when an opportunity arises, but Nader’s men discover him trying to smuggle a weapon into the house.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Part One Early-retired BKA officer Frank Hennings loses his wife and daughter in a bomb attack in Berlin. After the police close the investigation just two days later, he uses the access to the police’s internal information channels he retained from his time in active service and finds clues pointing to Sharif Nader as the possible mastermind. Nader is believed to be in Morocco. Traveling under a false identity, Hennings goes to Tangier and gets hired at Nader’s heavily guarded estate as piano teacher to his daughter, Yasmin. He plans to shoot Nader as soon as an opportunity arises, but Nader’s men discover him trying to smuggle a weapon into the house. At the same time, armed men break into the estate. Nader is killed in the fighting, and Hennings flees into the city with Yasmin. However, the Moroccan authorities believe he is Nader’s murderer and are searching for him. Yasmin’s aunt helps them go into hiding and gives Yasmin a small notebook that she was supposed to keep safe for her father. Meanwhile, Hennings tracks down Nader’s employee Abdellah, the only member of staff to survive the massacre, and learns from him that he had planted the bomb in Berlin that killed Hennings’s family. Hennings then shoots him. Part Two Hennings and Yasmin hide out on a boat. The notes suggest that arms dealer Abu Bahir was responsible for the attack on Sharif Nader. Hennings stays in contact with his friend and former colleague, Martin Ritzenhoff, who urges him to leave Morocco as soon as possible. In the end, they are able to do so using the boat, which Hennings manages to get running. Meanwhile, in Berlin, Ritzenhoff is summoned by BND investigator Dieter Michaelis, who is also keenly interested in Nader’s notebook. Ritzenhoff realizes that the BND itself has had a hand in the affair, and that Hennings will have to stay in hiding in Germany for the time being once he returns from Morocco. Immediately after Hennings and Yasmin escape, contract killer Nazimah begins tracking them. When Yasmin makes the mistake of shopping in Spain with her credit card, their pursuer discovers where they are. Ritzenhoff travels to meet Hennings and only just manages to shake off the BND agents following him. By the time he reaches Hennings’s hideout, Nazimah and an accomplice are already there, and she shoots Ritzenhoff without warning. After a fight, Hennings manages to overpower Nazimah and her accomplice, saving his and Yasmin’s lives. The two travel by bus from Spain to Berlin. Once Hennings manages to decipher Nader’s notebook, he finds detailed records of arms dealers in war zones and weapons shipments from Germany. He contacts Dieter Michaelis and offers him the notebook in exchange for arranging for Abu Bahir to come to Germany so Yasmin can speak undisturbed with her father’s murderer. During his meeting with Michaelis, Hennings learns that the BND had set Bahir up as their spy, but that Bahir no longer keeps to any agreements. In effect, the BND is therefore partly responsible not only for Hennings’s family’s deaths, but also for the massacre at Nader’s house. Hennings prepares a suitcase with an explosive device, which Yasmin is supposed to use to hand the notebook over to Bahir. But he changes his mind and lets Bahir have the notes. He gives Yasmin his word of honor that the two of them will be left alone from then on. The BND, however, sees this gesture of personal forgiveness differently: Bommer, one of Michaelis’s staff, shoots Bahir in the back and takes the notebook. In the final scene, Hennings and Yasmin walk arm in arm like father and daughter, while Bommer follows them from a greater distance.
