Full plot (contains spoilers)
The crew of the USS Enterprise arrives at Starbase Yorktown, where Captain Kirk is seeking a promotion while Spock prepares to leave Starfleet. They are dispatched to a nearby nebula to rescue a survivor named Kalara. Upon arrival, they are ambushed by a swarm of ships led by Krall, who seeks the Abronath, a powerful relic. The Enterprise is destroyed, and the crew is scattered across the planet Altamid. Kirk and others find Kalara, who is revealed as a spy. Meanwhile, Jaylah, a scavenger, helps Scotty find safety. The crew eventually reunites and discovers that Krall is actually Balthazar Edison, a former captain of the USS Franklin who became a mutated creature. They reclaim the Franklin and use it to pursue Krall to Yorktown. They defeat his bioweapon, and the crew decides to remain in their roles, with Kirk choosing to stay a captain and Spock choosing to stay in Starfleet.
