After the death of Spock, the crew of the USS Enterprise must steal a decommissioned ship to return his body to his homeworld and reunite his spirit with his physical form.

The story

Following a battle with the superhuman Khan Noonien Singh, the Federation starship limps back to Earth with Spock among the casualties. Upon arrival, Doctor Leonard McCoy begins to act strangely and is arrested. Starfleet informs the crew that the ship is to be decommissioned and orders them not to speak about the experimental terraforming device known as Genesis. However, Kirk learns that Spock's spirit, or katra, is held in McCoy's mind. To return Spock's body to his homeworld, Kirk and his officers must disobey orders, spring McCoy from detention, and steal the decommissioned USS Enterprise.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After the death of Spock during a battle with Khan, his casket lands on the Genesis planet. On Earth, McCoy begins acting strangely, and Kirk discovers Spock's spirit (katra) is in McCoy's mind. Kirk, McCoy, and the crew steal the decommissioned USS Enterprise to return Spock's body to Vulcan. They discover that the Genesis Device has resurrected Spock as a rapidly aging child, but his mind is missing. They are intercepted by the Klingon commander Kruge, who seeks the Genesis secrets as a weapon. During a standoff, David Marcus is killed. Kirk and his crew feign surrender, destroy the Enterprise to eliminate the Klingons, and beam to the planet. Kirk lures Kruge into a final confrontation, defeating him. On the planet, Spock's katra is reunited with his body in a ceremony called fal tor pan. Spock is resurrected, though his memories are fragmented, and he eventually recognizes Kirk and the crew.
