Tristan, a man from the village of Wall, uses a magic candle to enter the kingdom of Stormhold to retrieve a fallen star for his beloved Victoria. He finds the star is a woman named Yvaine. They are pursued by three witch sisters, led by Lamia, who want to consume Yvaine's heart for immortality, and by Prince Septimus, who seeks the heart to claim the throne. During their journey, they are captured by a band of pirates led by Captain Shakespeare, who trains them. After a period of traveling together, Tristan realizes Yvaine will die if she crosses the wall back to his world. He leaves her to find a way to save her, and they eventually join forces with Septimus to confront the witches.
