A suspicious letter in his Stasi file unsettles novelist Ludger Fuchs’s marriage and brings his past back into focus.
The story
The acclaimed novelist Ludger Fuchs, once a prominent face of the East German opposition in Prenzlauer Berg, is pressed by those around him to request access to his Stasi file. He finds an intimate letter, torn up and glued back together, and the discovery makes his wife Corinna suspicious. Ludger insists it dates from before they met, but his explanation is obviously false and fails to reassure her. As he reflects on his youth in the early 1980s, he remembers being recruited by the Stasi and infiltrated into Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg cultural scene.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The acclaimed novelist Ludger Fuchs used to be one of the faces of the East German opposition in Prenzlauer Berg. He has let those around him pressure him into applying to see his Stasi file. In it, he finds an intimate letter that has been torn up and glued back together, which arouses his wife Corinna’s suspicions. His insistence that it dates from before he met Corinna is obviously false and does not reassure her. Ludger remembers how, as a young man in the early 1980s, he was recruited by the Stasi and infiltrated into Berlin’s cultural scene in Prenzlauer Berg. The consistently loyal Ludger, who was actually assigned to work as an informant, quickly becomes a sought-after poet in the artists’ scene. And he has fallen in love with the mysterious Natalie.
