The official debut of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in one of the first cartoons with fully synchronized sound.

The story

Mickey Mouse is piloting a side-wheeler paddle steamer, cheerfully whistling and sounding the boat's whistles. The peaceful atmosphere is interrupted when a large, intimidating character named Pete appears and orders Mickey off the bridge. A series of comedic mishaps ensues as Mickey navigates the deck, dealing with a mocking parrot and the physical comedy of the ship's environment. The film serves as a showcase for early synchronized sound technology, featuring a fully post-produced soundtrack and various musical numbers performed by the characters.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mickey Mouse pilots a paddle steamer while Pete, a large man, tries to evict him from the bridge. After a series of slapstick encounters involving a parrot and a bucket of soapy water, Pete takes over the helm. The boat stops at "Podunk Landing" to pick up livestock. Mickey struggles with a thin cow, eventually stuffing it with hay to fit a harness. Minnie Mouse appears and runs along the shore; Mickey eventually pulls her onto the boat using a crane. A goat eats their sheet music, and the pair begins a musical performance using the goat and other animals as instruments. Pete, annoyed by the noise, forces Mickey to peel potatoes. Mickey retaliates by peeling them wastefully. The film concludes with Mickey laughing as he sits among the potatoes while the parrot continues to squawk from the water.
