Two strangers on a train propose a macabre deal to exchange murders so that neither will be caught.
The story
Amateur tennis star Guy Haines is approached on a train by a wealthy, smooth-talking psychopath named Bruno Antony. Bruno proposes a bizarre scheme: they will 'swap' murders, with each person killing someone the other has a motive for, ensuring neither is suspected. Guy, initially amused but wary, agrees to the concept and leaves behind a cigarette lighter. When Guy later discovers that Bruno has already carried out his half of the deal by murdering Guy's wife, he finds himself entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse. As the police begin to investigate the crime, Guy must navigate the consequences of his involvement with the unpredictable Bruno.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Guy Haines, a tennis star, meets a psychopath named Bruno Antony on a train. Bruno proposes they 'swap' murders: Bruno will kill Guy's wife, Miriam, and Guy will kill Bruno's father. Guy agrees and leaves his lighter with Bruno. Bruno kills Miriam at an amusement park while Guy is traveling to Washington, D.C. When Guy learns of her death, he is pressured by Bruno to fulfill his end of the bargain. The plot thickens as the police investigate, and Guy's involvement becomes increasingly dangerous. Bruno begins to stalk Guy, even appearing at a party where he is seen by Anne Morton, the woman Guy intends to marry. Anne eventually realizes the truth about Bruno's scheme. Bruno sends Guy a package to lure him into a final confrontation. In a climactic fight at an amusement park, the two men struggle on a malfunctioning carousel. A police officer's shot causes the carousel to break, and Bruno is trapped and killed underneath it. The police find Guy's lighter in Bruno's hand, clearing him of suspicion. The film ends with Guy and Anne fleeing from another stranger on a train who attempts to strike up a conversation.
