Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film tells the story of Dr. Jekyll, a successful author. One day, one of his fictional characters, Hyde, breaks free from the story and enters Jekyll’s life. With the help of the fairy Jeanny, Hyde takes Jekyll’s penis, and later his hair and teeth as well, increasingly pushing him out of his successful life. Alongside its overt depiction of primal male fears such as impotence and the loss of power and identity, Roehler also engages with the ideas of the French writer Michel Houellebecq. Gradually, Dr. Jekyll loses all the symbols associated with success in consumer society, eventually recognizing that they are meaningless when it comes to personal happiness.
