When twelve-year-old Sven steals from a young woman, he learns she is his new teacher—and she chooses to help rather than report him.
The story
Twelve-year-old Sven grows up amid violence, neglect, and juvenile delinquency, finding recognition mainly in a youth gang where he works as a pickpocket. One day, he steals from a young woman who turns out to be his new homeroom teacher, Vera Loewe. Rather than report him, she tries to reach the withdrawn boy and offer support. Her efforts are hindered by the difficult social environment, the gang’s influence, and the resignation of many adults.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Twelve-year-old Sven is growing up in an environment shaped by violence, neglect, and juvenile delinquency. He finds recognition mainly within a youth gang, for which he works as a pickpocket. One day, he steals from a young woman who later turns out to be his new homeroom teacher, Vera Loewe. Instead of reporting him, the teacher tries to reach the withdrawn boy and offer him support. Her efforts are made more difficult, however, by the challenging social environment, the gang’s influence, and the resignation of many adults. As the story unfolds, Vera is increasingly drawn into her students’ world. A relationship of trust gradually develops between her and Sven.
