A grieving concert pianist retreats to his mother’s farm, where the cow he buys begins producing milk that intoxicates the village.
The story
After a long illness, concert pianist Bogdan loses his wife, Izabela, and withdraws from the stage to his mother Katharina’s farm. Grieving, he drinks heavily as he struggles with the fact that his and Izabela’s daughter helped her mother die. Katharina urges him to restore the dilapidated farm and do hard work in the barn, but he approaches the task reluctantly and relies on schnapps. When a neighbor sells him a cow, shopkeeper Pawel suggests playing classical music to increase its milk production. Bogdan dismisses the idea as foolish, then tries it anyway; soon the cow’s milk intoxicates the entire village.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a long illness, internationally acclaimed concert pianist Bogdan loses his wife, Izabela—a famous opera singer and his childhood sweetheart. Grief-stricken, he turns his back on the stage and retreats to his mother’s farm. He tries to cope by drinking heavily with the fact that their daughter helped her mother die. But his mother, Katharina, has a different remedy for heartache: renovating the dilapidated farm and doing hard work in the barn. Bogdan takes on the task reluctantly and continues to make the work more bearable with plenty of schnapps. After a neighbor sells him a cow, the local shopkeeper, Pawel, advises him to play classical music to it so it will produce more milk. Bogdan thinks this is foolish talk, but in his lethargy he does it anyway. Before long, his cow is producing very unusual milk that intoxicates the entire village. Gradually, Bogdan realizes that the cow is no ordinary cow and comes to believe that he has found his lost love, Izabela, in her. His mother, Katharina, and his daughter, Anna, want none of it; only Pawel stands by him. When the vet tells Bogdan that the cow, too, will soon have to die, Bogdan is once again in danger of falling into despair. But his daughter’s love and the prospect of a grandchild may save him from it.
