A school band’s chance to open for Madsen depends on classmate Inge agreeing to fill in for its injured guitarist—and on the band accepting her demand to stop playing the song that mocks her.
The story
Max and his schoolmates’ band, Systemfehler, gets an offer from manager Dan Biermann to open for Madsen, provided they perform “Wenn Inge tanzt,” their song mocking classmate Inge, among other songs. They accept despite guitarist Joscha having injured both hands. Max asks Inge, who gets along badly with him, to replace Joscha. She agrees only on conditions, chiefly that the band stop playing the song. The boys accept, hoping to persuade her otherwise. Inge also requires them to perform at the school’s summer benefit festival.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Max and his schoolmates have a band called “Systemfehler.” Their song “Wenn Inge tanzt,” in which they make fun of their classmate Inge, has become somewhat famous, so their manager, Dan Biermann, offers them the chance to open for Madsen, on the condition that they perform “Wenn Inge tanzt” along with other songs of their choice. Max and the others don’t want to turn down the offer, so they accept, even though guitarist Joscha has injured both hands. Max’s uncle and former schlager star, Herbert “Herb” König, is the guitar coach of Max’s classmate Inge, who gets along with Max about as badly as possible. Nevertheless, Max asks her if she can replace Joscha. Inge agrees, but with a few conditions. The biggest one is that they must stop playing “Wenn Inge tanzt.” The boys agree, hoping they can persuade Inge to play the song after all. Another condition is that the band must also perform at the school’s summer benefit festival. There, Max makes fun of the music teacher Frau Stranger’s band, so she takes away his key to the rehearsal room. They break into the school at night and take the instruments. After doing a photo shoot for the performance, they blindfold Inge under the pretense that they want to put her through a band ritual, so she won’t see the Madsen posters advertising Systemfehler and the song “Wenn Inge tanzt.” The band takes her to the riverbank, where the other band members leave Max and Inge alone, and they grow closer. At a party that evening, Inge and Max kiss for the first time. Joscha practices with his injured hands and manages to play a few notes on the guitar again. He overhears Max and the drummer, Lukas, praising Inge’s guitar skills, and then, out of jealousy, tells Inge that they had planned to play the song from the beginning. Inge is angry and wants to call off the concert. Herb persuades her to accompany him to the concert. When Max announces onstage that he no longer wants to play the song, Inge comes onstage and performs it with the band, saving the concert, and the band eventually gets a record deal. Inge is now also a band member. At the end, Inge and Max visit his parents, who live in Cuba.
