Full plot (contains spoilers)
Director Viktór has invited numerous actors to an audition in an empty rented apartment. He is looking for a leading actor whose life he can breathe into through the camera (a film quote). In his first appearance, Rudi gets off a tram in front of a cemetery. He walks stiff-legged, buys a bouquet of flowers, and continues on to his mother’s, but does not find her there. She is the landlady of the apartment where Viktór is holding screen tests. By chance, Rudi takes part in the audition. He is supposed to shoot a kissing scene with the extra Tünde, but repeatedly refuses to do so. When Tünde provokes him, Rudi kills her. He flees the scene. It turns out that Tünde was his stepsister. Eventually, mother and son meet. They have not seen each other for a long time. His mother knows, however, that he committed the murder and hides him. Rudi meets Magda, who lives in his mother’s apartment. She is the stepsister of his stepsister Tünde. Magda and Rudi become friends. She hides him in the attic of the house, locking him in there. Viktór discovers that Rudi is his son—and Magda finds out too. She knows that Rudi is a murderer. The situation escalates when Rudi demands that his mother give Magda to him as his wife. His mother grants his wish. Later, Rudi kills his mother’s husband in Magda’s presence. He then kills his mother when she tries to confront him. Viktór sets out to find his son. They drive to the mountains together and have a car accident, in which Rudi is seriously injured. In the final scene, Viktór trudges through a snowy landscape. Magda’s fate remains unclear.
