The story

Chief Detective Johannes Fischer begins examining the Eckerts’ family life in the days before the accident. The day after the crash, Fischer is called to investigate the murder of Lisa Marin, a German-Romanian art history student found shot dead on a park bench. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Family man Lars Eckert runs his car off the road. In the tragic accident, his eleven-year-old daughter Anna dies; he had just picked her up from ice hockey practice. Although Eckert is certain that he was blinded by a kind of flash of light in the heavy snowfall, both the police and his wife, Kirsten, believe that no one else was to blame. Chief Detective Johannes Fischer, who is investigating the case, begins to examine the Eckerts’ family life in the days leading up to the accident. The day after the fatal crash, Fischer is called to another case. The body of Lisa Marin, a German-Romanian art history student, is found shot dead on a park bench. The investigation turns its attention to married Hamburg banker Markus Sellin, who had been having a secret affair with the young woman. Fischer discovers that the Sellins’ marriage is under severe strain: Tanja Sellin drinks heavily during her depressive episodes, and her husband has now given up hope. Sellin had not only paid for Lisa Marin’s apartment but had also covered her living expenses. Unhappy in his marriage, he was enchanted by Marin’s joie de vivre and artistic sensibility. Fischer and his superior, Konstanze Satorius, along with another colleague, Lutz Wegener, delve into Marin’s past and discover that there were other men who had fallen for her. It seems that Marin had a particular interest in financially exploiting men and ruining their lives, especially respectable family men. It emerges that Sellin and Marin had a serious argument when he realized that, despite his financial support, she was supplementing her income through prostitution. The argument ended with the disillusioned banker speeding through the night in his car and inadvertently forcing Eckert’s car off the road. In the end, Sellin hangs himself in his house. Sellin’s colleague, who had also been involved with Marin and had likewise discovered that she was prostituting herself, is exposed as her murderer.
