After Köping is branded Sweden’s dullest town, Hasse P sets out to put it on the map with the world’s longest sandwich cake.
The story
In 1985, Swedish Television’s programme Rekordmagazinet names Köping Sweden’s dullest town, leaving its local community at a standstill while the country laughs. Hasse P decides to answer the insult by organizing the creation of the world’s longest sandwich cake to put the town on the map. He persuades a local bakery’s owners to make it and takes responsibility for promoting the event and selling tickets. But Hasse P is widely known as the local drunk and has a poor reputation and business record, putting the project in doubt. Meanwhile, the bakery’s grieving owner has withdrawn from the world, as his son and daughter keep the business running.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The year is 1985, and on Swedish Television’s programme Rekordmagazinet, Köping is named Sweden’s dullest town. While the local community is brought to a standstill and an entire country laughs, Hasse P decides to prove the “Stockholm bastards” wrong by having the world’s longest sandwich cake made, hoping to put the town on the map. Hasse P persuades the owners of a local bakery to make the cake, while he is to promote the event and sell tickets. However, it soon becomes clear that Hasse P will struggle to fulfil his part of the deal, since he is mostly known as the local drunk, with a far from impressive reputation or track record in business. As a subplot, the baker (played by Tomas von Brömsen) has withdrawn from the world because of grief, while his son and daughter keep the business running. Along the way, they manage to persuade him to break out of his isolation and take part in the cake project. Filip Hammar’s childhood is also portrayed in the film. His father is described as a loving but impractical Francophile.
