The story
Eleven-year-old Rikke lives with her father in a poor neighborhood in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro district. With her mother dead and her father often away at work, she feels lonely and longs for a horse. During a sports broadcast, she persuades her distracted father to agree to getting one. Soon after, Rikke wins a pony in a Corn Flakes sweepstakes, but her father objects and says he does not remember giving permission. A man connected with the housing complex recognizes Rikke’s need and arranges for the pony, whom she names Tarzan, to stay in an unfinished second-floor apartment. The pony’s arrival starts drawing the neighborhood’s residents together.

Eleven-year-old Rikke lives alone with her father in a slum neighborhood in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro district. Rikke’s mother is dead, so Rikke is very lonely while her father is at work. Rikke wishes for a horse and one day, during a sports broadcast that her father is engrossed in, manages to persuade him to agree to getting one. As luck would have it, one day Rikke wins a pony in a Corn Flakes sweepstakes. Rikke’s father is not pleased about getting the horse and does not remember giving her permission to have one. Another man, connected with the housing complex, recognizes Rikke’s need and arranges for the horse, whom Rikke calls Tarzan, to be installed in an unfinished apartment on the second floor. Tarzan’s arrival in the housing complex brings the residents together, setting off changes in the lives of several of the neighborhood’s eccentric characters and leading to Rikke’s father becoming good friends with her teacher. When Rikke meets the pony’s former owner, who had been forced to sell it and had called it Mama Mia, they also find a solution.
