Two feuding Swabian villages must unite their musicians to raise money to rebuild their collapsed church.
The story
After prolonged rain causes their church to collapse, Pastor Schäuble and the villagers face the challenge of finding money to rebuild it. They set their hopes on the prize money from a music competition in Hamburg. But the two neighboring villages, Oberrieslingen and Unterrieslingen, have a history of rivalry, and the competing musical groups—a rock band and a brass band—cannot agree on a conductor. A neutral choir director, Hinnark Krüger, is brought in to help them work together. As preparations continue, old family tensions and disagreements threaten to undermine the attempt to make a unified group.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Pastor Schäuble has a lot to worry about. The church roof is leaking, and after a prolonged spell of rain, the whole church collapses. To make matters worse, it now comes to light that the pastor spent the money donated so far on alcohol and, in his despair, is planning to kill himself. The villagers manage to stop him by joining forces. Having got through all that, they look for a way to raise the money needed to rebuild the church. Then they find an opportunity to enter a music competition in Hamburg and hope for the prize money. Although the long-standing “feud” between the villages of Oberrieslingen and Unterrieslingen has been settled, the rivalry between the Häberle and Rossbauer families is not quite over, and they still cannot agree. Despite having a child together, Klara Häberle and Peter Rossbauer have been unable to continue living together. To have a chance in the competition, the rock band from Unterrieslingen and the brass band from Oberrieslingen would have to join forces. But this immediately falls apart because they cannot agree on a conductor: neither side wants to be “ordered around” by the other. The solution would be a neutral choir director, and they find one in “Fischkopp” Hinnark Krüger. Hinnark struggles to coordinate the discord that remains into a harmonious whole. To do so, he has to bring out the choir members’ team spirit and get them to work together more. Pastor Schäuble surprises the choir with a homemade xylophone made from wine bottles, and the musicians increasingly enjoy making music together. The big day approaches, and the choir sets off for Hamburg by bus. But the journey is not without problems: having people from Oberrieslingen and Unterrieslingen cooped up together for so long leads to conflict. To make matters worse, the bus breaks down, and the group has to spend the night on the way. At last they arrive in Hamburg and check into a small hotel, which happens to be in the red-light district. Klara Häberle, who is heavily pregnant, goes into labor there, and all the commotion makes the entire choir late for the competition. This leads to such a furious row that the choir members start fighting one another, then head back to Swabia without competing. Back home, Pastor Schäuble packs his things and plans to leave the village because everyone is so divided and too stingy to rebuild their own church. During the trip, Peter Rossbauer had realized that he could no longer do without Klara Häberle and his children, and he tells his parents he is leaving the farm to move in with Klara. But he is not welcome at her parents’ farm, so the little family camps in a tent in the meadow. Howard Jones, who had only ever tried quietly to win Christine Häberle over, finally talks things through with her, and the two agree to set off into the world together. Maria Häberle finds all this unbearable and tries to bring the feuding villages back together, but no one is willing to give in. So she sets off alone to rebuild the church without the others’ help. This makes everyone think, and they finally pitch in after all. Karl Rossbauer at last realizes that Maria likes him, and Oberrieslingen and Unterrieslingen manage to reconcile. They bring their pastor back, and he is quite astonished by what his “flock” has accomplished—even if the new church looks a little unusual.
