The story
When the body of a young man is found on a Barcelona beach, investigators face an unusual mystery: he has no known identity, and a revolutionary phrase is tattooed on his arm. The assignment of identifying him falls to Pepe Carvalho, a Galician detective, former CIA agent, and born skeptic. Carvalho pursues the case through Barcelona’s underworld and onward to Amsterdam, seeking to learn who the dead man was.

The body of a young man is found on a Barcelona beach, his face eaten away by fish, with the words “I was born to revolutionize hell” tattooed on his arm. Thus begins a strange mystery. The first task is to find a name for the dead man and discover his identity. This is the assignment given to Pepe Carvalho, a Galician detective, former CIA agent, and born skeptic—though that does not stop him from enjoying and savoring the pleasures of good food and good sex. Moving between Barcelona’s underworld and the streets and canals of Amsterdam, Carvalho soon finds the answer.
