The story
After his wife dies, poor Jakob Hirzbacher sets out with his son, Andris, to seek their fortune in a village in the Hohe Tauern, where gold was reportedly found in 1870. By the time they arrive, the rush is over, though prospectors remain camped in a valley. Jakob finds work with Katharina, an impoverished woman, and falls in love with her. When her father dies, influential Hubertus von Feileis offers her money for the mining rights to her property so she can pay her debts. Katharina refuses, putting Jakob in the way of Feileis, who has him driven out of the village.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After his wife dies, the poor Jakob Hirzbacher sets out with his son to seek his fortune. Gold is said to have been found in a village in the Hohe Tauern in 1870, but by the time the two arrive, the gold rush is long over. A group of prospectors is still camped in a valley. Jakob finds work with the impoverished Katharina, and falls in love with her. After her father dies, Hubertus von Feileis offers Katharina money for the mining rights to her property so that she can pay off her debts. She refuses. Since Jakob stands in the way of the equally influential and violent Feileis, Feileis has him driven out of the village. Eventually, Jakob’s son Andris discovers the entrance to an abandoned mine, where they finally find the precious metal. When Feileis learns of this, he turns the villagers against the prospectors, shoots two of them, and forces Jakob to lead him to the mine. As Feileis tries to hack the gold out of the rock, the mine collapses and buries him. Jakob manages to escape and begins a new life with Katharina.
