The story
Two years after the events of the first film, Ted marries his girlfriend, Tami-Lynn. When they decide to have a baby, they discover that Ted's legal status as a person is in question. After being declared property by authorities, Ted loses his job, bank accounts, and marriage. To fight this, John and a novice lawyer, Sam, take the case to court. Meanwhile, a stalker named Donny attempts to exploit Ted's status as property for commercial gain. The group must navigate legal hurdles and physical dangers to prove Ted's sentience and humanity in a high-stakes legal battle.

Following a disagreement about their future, Ted and Tami-Lynn decide to adopt a child. However, the state declares Ted to be property, leading to the loss of his rights and assets. John and a novice lawyer, Sam, take the case to court. While they travel to find a high-profile civil rights attorney, Donny—a stalker who wants to use Ted for commercial manufacturing—attempts to abduct him. After a series of setbacks and a physical confrontation where John is injured, the group manages to get the case before a respected attorney. He eventually rules in Ted's favor by proving Ted is self-aware and capable of empathy. The film ends with Ted and Tami-Lynn being remarried and adopting a baby boy, while John and Sam begin a relationship.
