A filmmaker hired to reboot a slasher franchise becomes obsessed with the original's star while navigating the blurred lines between fiction and reality.
The story
Kris Williams, a queer filmmaker, is hired to direct a reboot of the long-running slasher franchise Camp Miasma. Although she knows the project is intended to make the series' transphobic premise more palatable for modern audiences, Kris feels a deep personal connection to the films from her youth. She travels to the Pacific Northwest to cast Billy Presley, an actress who starred in the original 1980 film and has since lived in seclusion on the abandoned filming grounds. As Kris and Billy connect over their shared obsession with the franchise, Kris becomes determined to cast Billy in her original role despite the complexities of the production.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Kris Williams is hired to reboot the slasher franchise Camp Miasma, a series featuring the ghost 'Little Death.' Kris travels to the Pacific Northwest to find Billy Presley, the original 'final girl,' who lives on the abandoned set. The two women bond over the film's history and their personal lives. During a screening of the original, they share an intimate moment where Billy reveals she was sexually assaulted during filming and only learned to enjoy sex by imagining Little Death's presence. Kris admits she also struggles with pleasure unless she can inhabit a fantasy. During a pitch meeting, Kris claims the characters are all part of a film and that Little Death is real. She returns to the camp where a supernatural event occurs; Little Death begins a killing spree. Kris is forced into the role of the final girl, eventually finding Billy in a cabin. They have sex as Little Death approaches; Kris accepts her fate and experiences an orgasm as they are both pierced by his spear. They awaken covered in blood, leave the grounds, and visit a gas station. Kris recites a line from a previous film, claiming they can still feel Little Death's presence, and they walk away together in a split diopter shot.
