A police commissioner conceals her profession from a former classmate as a renewed romance unfolds alongside her investigation into a string of political murders.
The story
Police commissioner Lise Tanquerelle is startled when the moped rider she has just hit with her car in the streets of Paris turns out to be Antoine Lemercier, a former classmate she has not seen for twenty-five years. Their reunion quickly sparks a romance, but Lise keeps her occupation secret from Antoine, who has become a Greek teacher and is strongly opposed to the police. At the same time, she is assigned to investigate a string of bizarre killings: three members of parliament have been murdered one after another, each with an awl stuck in his back.

Lise Tanquerelle (Annie Girardot), a police commissioner, is surprised to discover that the moped rider she has just hit with her car on the streets of Paris is none other than Antoine Lemercier (Philippe Noiret), a former classmate she has not seen for twenty-five years. Their reunion sparks love at first sight, but Lise hides her profession from Antoine, who has become a Greek teacher and is also fiercely anti-police. Alongside this budding romance, Lise must investigate a series of bizarre murders: three members of parliament, killed one after another with an awl stuck in their backs.
