Full plot (contains spoilers)
The year is 2015. Tom, a young eco-activist, receives mysterious emails from someone called “Lena.” They contain information that can help him win money, as well as an instruction to buy a stained-glass window by a local artist and bury it in a park. Later that day, Tom and his fellow activists hang a banner from a tall building, but the building’s external lift crashes down, killing them all. Twenty-five years later, the brilliant scientist Viktor and his assistant Titus invent a machine that can send emails into the past. As an experiment, they send Tom the emails about the money and the stained-glass window, since stained-glass windows like it are worth a fortune in 2040. They choose Tom as their guinea pig because he is due to die shortly afterwards and would therefore make few changes to the future. The experiment works, and Viktor realizes something momentous: on the day Tom died, Viktor’s girlfriend Lena was hit by a car, leaving her paralyzed for life. Viktor therefore sends Tom an email asking him to stop the car. Instead of Lena, Tom’s girlfriend Griet is hit. As a result, Tom spends the night in the hospital and does not die in the lift accident. Because of these changes, Viktor and Lena do not remain a couple, and he does not invent a time machine with Titus. However, Titus had emailed information about the time machine, Viktor’s relationship, and Tom and Lena’s accidents to a point a few days before the accidents, in order to preserve information from the original timeline in case anything went wrong. Titus receives this data back in the new 2040 and, when he confronts Viktor with it, believes that Tom should have died. He sends Tom an email inviting him to a bus shelter that is about to be hit by a truck. Tom is not in the right place, however, and his best friend Dimi is killed in his place. Tom confronts the young Viktor and Lena, whom he believes are responsible for all his misery. The timeline changes again, forcing Titus in 2040 to explain everything to Viktor all over again. Viktor visits Tom, now older, and confesses everything that happened. Tom is furious and forbids Viktor ever to send emails to the past again, because they have ruined his whole life. Viktor nevertheless sends one last email to Tom, asking him not to stop the car, so that it is Viktor himself—not Griet or Lena—who gets hit. This puts him in Lena’s place as the paralyzed one of the two, and they probably remain a couple after all, since it was implied that they stayed together in the original timeline only because Lena needed care.
