The story

Adam suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), manifesting as nightmares and frequent flashbacks. His wife encourages him to seek help from an overburdened Department of Veterans Affairs. Full plot (contains spoilers)

After a harrowing 15-month combat tour in Iraq, the much-decorated Adam Schumann returns home to Kansas to his wife, Saskia, and their two young children. Adam suffers from PTSD, manifesting as nightmares and frequent flashbacks. His wife encourages him to seek help from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Adam finds solace with two nearby buddies: Solo Aieti, an American Samoan, and Billy Waller, who commits suicide after being betrayed by his fiancée. Adam's trauma is rooted in a failed rescue of Michael Emory and survivor's guilt over Sergeant First Class James Doster, who died after hitting an IED while filling in for Adam. Doster's widow, Amanda, eventually finds closure and absolves Adam and Solo of responsibility. Meanwhile, Solo suffers from severe PTSD and memory loss, leading him to fall in with drug dealers led by a Gulf War veteran, Dante. Adam rescues Solo and places him in a rehabilitation center. Sometime later, Adam returns from his own stay at the rehabilitation center to his wife and children.
