The story

While attending a suburban Christian middle school, Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos formed a bond over their interest in militaria, but were frequently in trouble with teachers and the school principal. On one visit to the principal's office, the two met another student being disciplined, Anthony Sadler, and they all became friends. Spencer and Alek were raised by single mothers, who defended their sons when they were called to the principal's office to discuss their misconduct in school.
