The story
In London, a Canadian civilian named Richard Hannay witnesses a crime at a music hall and meets a woman named Annabella Smith. She reveals she is a spy who has uncovered a plot by a clandestine organization called 'The 39 Steps' to steal British military secrets. After Smith is murdered, Hannay finds a map of the Scottish Highlands and flees to avoid assassins. He becomes a fugitive on a nationwide manhunt, eventually traveling to Scotland where he encounters a woman named Pamela. Together, they must navigate a dangerous landscape to stop the spy ring and clear Hannay's name.

At a London music hall, Richard Hannay meets Annabella Smith, a spy who tells him about a plot by 'The 39 Steps' to steal military secrets. After Smith is killed, Hannay finds a map of the Scottish Highlands and flees to Scotland disguised as a milkman. He is pursued by police and escapes a confrontation on the Forth Bridge. He eventually reaches Alt-na-Shellach, where he meets Professor Jordan, who turns out to be the spy ringleader. Jordan shoots Hannay, but he survives thanks to a hymnary in his coat. Hannay later gives a speech at a political meeting where he is again caught by police, who turn out to be agents of the conspiracy. He escapes with Pamela, and they eventually discover that the spy 'Mr. Memory' has memorized the secrets. At the London Palladium, Hannay forces Mr. Memory to reveal the organization's identity before Jordan kills him. Mr. Memory dies reciting the design for a silent aircraft engine.
