An elderly man claiming to be the legendary Baron Munchausen interrupts a stage play to recount his fantastical life of wartime exploits and impossible journeys.

The story

In an unnamed war-torn European city during the "Age of Reason," a touring stage production of Baron Munchausen's life is performed. The play is interrupted by an elderly man claiming to be the real Baron, who begins to narrate his own adventures to the audience. He recounts a life-or-death wager with the Grand Turk, highlighting his luck and his remarkable associates. When the performance is disrupted, the Baron wanders backstage and eventually escapes the city walls in a hot air balloon constructed of women's underwear, accompanied by a young girl named Sally Salt.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

During a play in a war-torn European city, the 'real' Baron Munchausen narrates his adventures, including a wager with the Grand Turk where he is aided by his superhuman associates: Berthold, Adolphus, Gustavus, and Albrecht. After the theatre company cancels his contract, the Baron is saved from the Angel of Death by Sally Salt. He escapes the city in a hot air balloon made of women's underwear, traveling to the Moon. There, he encounters the King of the Moon, a giant with separate minds in his head and body, and eventually returns to Earth into the volcano of the god Vulcan. After a romantic interlude with Venus, the group is expelled to the South Seas, where they are swallowed by a sea creature but escape by making it sneeze. The Baron eventually returns to the city to face the Turkish army. His companions, though exhausted, perform fantastic acts to rout the army and liberate the city. During the celebration, the Baron is shot by the mayor, Horatio Jackson. The film concludes by revealing the entire sequence was merely the final scene of another story the Baron was telling to the theatregoers.
