Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jim Carroll, a high school basketball player and aspiring writer in New York City, becomes increasingly consumed by heroin addiction. Following the death of his friend Bobby, Jim's spiral intensifies. After being caught using drugs at school, he is suspended and eventually dropped out. His mother disowns him, leading him and his friends into a life of homelessness and crime. After a series of desperate acts, including a failed attempt to detox with the help of a friend named Reggie, Jim is eventually arrested for various offenses and sentenced to six months at Rikers Island. During his incarceration, he focuses on his writing. The film concludes with Jim, now sober, giving a poetry reading where he is met by his former friend Pedro.
