A cynical teenager and a young boy find themselves transported to the North Pole after a mysterious shuttle ride.

The story

Kate Pierce is a cynical teen who is unhappy about spending Christmas in Cancún, Mexico with her mother, brother, and their new family members. Desperate to be back in the snow, she attempts to fly home to Boston. However, she and a young boy named Jack end up on a shuttle driven by Belsnickel, a nefarious Christmas elf. The journey takes them through a wormhole to the North Pole, where they are rescued by Santa Claus. The children are taken to the Santa and Mrs. Claus's home, where they are introduced to the magical village and its traditions while the threat of Belsnickel's schemes looms over the holiday.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After being transported to the North Pole by Belsnickel, Kate and Jack are taken in by Santa and Mrs. Claus. While the children sleep, Belsnickel and his follower Speck attempt to destroy the village by releasing a yule cat, making the elves go mad, and stealing the Christmas Star. The star's destruction causes the village to lose power. Santa and Kate travel to Turkey to find the forest elves and a replacement for the star. Meanwhile, Jack finds a cure for the maddened elves. During their journey back, Belsnickel steals the new star and uses a time-travel device, sending Santa and Kate back to 1990 Boston. Kate is detained by security but is helped by a boy named Doug, who she later realizes is her late father. Santa manages to raise the city's Christmas spirit, allowing them to return to the present. They race back to the North Pole, where Kate places the star on the tree, restoring power and peace. Santa reconciles with Belsnickel, who is transformed back into an elf. The children are returned to their family in Mexico, where Kate becomes more accepting of her new family.
