The story
In 1815, Edmond Dantès, a sailor on a French merchant vessel, is tasked with delivering a secret letter for Napoleon Bonaparte while on the island of Elba. However, his actions are witnessed by his friend Fernand Mondego. Following the death of their captain, Edmond is promoted to captain, sparking the jealousy of his rival, Danglars. When the secret letter is discovered, Edmond is arrested by the chief magistrate, Villefort, and imprisoned in the Château d'If. While serving his time, Edmond meets a fellow prisoner, Abbé Faria, who provides him with education and a map to a hidden treasure, setting the stage for his eventual escape and quest for justice.

After escaping the Château d'If and finding a treasure on the island of Montecristo, Edmond Dantès reinvents himself as the wealthy 'Count of Monte Cristo.' He spends years infiltrating the lives of those who betrayed him: Danglars, Villefort, and Fernand. He orchestrates a series of schemes to ruin them financially and legally. During his quest, he discovers that his former lover, Mercédes, is actually the mother of his child, as she was forced to marry Fernand. In a final confrontation, Edmond confronts Fernand at his family estate. After a fight to the death, Edmond wins and ultimately decides to leave his wealth and his new family behind, choosing to leave the Château d'If standing as a testament to his journey.
