Four high school boys with magical abilities must confront a rogue witch who seeks to steal their powers.

The story

In Ipswich, Massachusetts, four high school boys known as the 'Sons of Ipswich' possess magical abilities as descendants of colonial witch families. Their powers manifest at age 13 and grow until they 'ascend' at 18, though overuse can lead to insanity or death. When new students Sarah Wenham and Chase Collins arrive at their school, the boys become entangled in a series of paranormal occurrences. Caleb Danvers begins to suspect that Chase, who is secretly a descendant of a long-thought extinct fifth family of witches, is responsible for the dangerous magical activity surrounding the campus.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In Ipswich, Massachusetts, four high school boys—Caleb Danvers, Pogue Parry, Reid Garwin, and Tyler Simms—are the 'Sons of Ipswich,' descendants of colonial witch families with magical abilities. While magic is powerful, overuse causes accelerated aging and insanity. When new students Sarah Wenham and Chase Collins join their school, Caleb and Sarah begin a romance. However, paranormal events strike, and Caleb discovers Chase is a descendant of a supposedly extinct fifth witch family. Chase, who was adopted and unaware of his heritage, has become addicted to magic and seeks to steal power from other 'ascended' witches to stave off its effects. After Pogue is hospitalized by Chase, Caleb learns that Chase intends to take his power. Caleb takes Sarah to his father, William, who is decrepit from magic abuse. On Caleb's 18th birthday, Chase kidnaps Sarah and demands Caleb's powers. During a duel where Caleb is outmatched despite ascending, William sacrifices his life to transfer his powers to Caleb. Infused with his father's strength, Caleb strikes a final blow against Chase, defeating him. Sarah, Kate, and Pogue recover as Caleb and Sarah drive off together.
