Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a flying saucer lands in Washington, D.C., a humanoid alien named Klaatu and his robot, Gort, arrive to deliver a message to world leaders. Klaatu is wounded by a soldier and hospitalized while Gort stands guard. To better understand humanity, Klaatu spends time with a local woman, Helen, and her son, Bobby. He eventually meets Professor Barnhardt, a scientist who agrees to help relay the message. Klaatu warns that Earth's use of atomic power has alarmed other planets; if the message is ignored, Earth faces elimination. During a confrontation, Klaatu is shot and killed by the military. Helen, following his instructions, uses the phrase 'Klaatu barada nikto' to command Gort, who revives him. Together, they reach the gathered scientists.
