A group of psychopathic fugitives faces off against a determined sheriff in a gritty, road-movie style confrontation.

The story

In May 1978, a large posse of state troopers launches a search and destroy mission against the Firefly family, a group responsible for numerous homicides and disappearances. During the confrontation, the family members Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding manage to escape the authorities. They flee to a run-down motel, where they encounter a musical group and begin a violent spree. As they move through the landscape, they are pursued by the law and a pair of amoral bounty hunters. The film follows the escalating tension between the psychopathic fugitives and the law enforcement officers attempting to bring them to justice.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Following a shootout with state troopers in 1978, the Firefly family members Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding flee to the Kahiki Palms motel. While there, they take a musical group hostage and engage in acts of violence. Meanwhile, the sheriff, John Quincey Wydell, enlists the help of the 'Unholy Two' bounty hunters to track them down. After a series of violent encounters and a confrontation at a brothel, Wydell captures the Fireflys and takes them to their home. He subjects them to brutal torture, mirroring the methods they used on their victims. After a chaotic sequence involving a fire and a rescue attempt by Charlie Altamont, the surviving Fireflys escape in a car. In the final scene, as they face a police barricade, Otis gives his companions weapons and they drive into the blockade, where they are shot multiple times as the scene fades to black.
