Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story begins with Emma and Charlie meeting at a Boston café, where Emma's deafness leads to a successful courtship. Two years later, while preparing for their wedding, the couple and their wedding party (Mike and Rachel) confront their secrets. Mike admits to using a girl as a human shield, Rachel confesses to a cruel act against a neighbor, and Charlie admits to cyberbullying. The most shocking revelation comes from Emma, who admits to planning a school shooting as a teenager, a secret she kept while becoming a gun control advocate. As the wedding nears, Emma suffers from nightmares while Charlie becomes paranoid. A rift forms when Rachel stops speaking to Emma, and Charlie lies to her cousin, Samantha, to keep the peace. Meanwhile, Charlie has a secret sexual encounter with his coworker Misha, leading to a complicated dynamic. At the wedding reception, a drunken Rachel insults both of them. In a chaotic misunderthought confrontation in the bathroom, Emma and Misha's conflict over Charlie's actions leads to a public fallout. After a disastrous speech by Charlie, the couple is separated. The film ends with them reuniting at a diner, where they choose to start over as if they were meeting for the first time.
