The story
In Haiti, photographer Victor Fielding and his pregnant wife Sorenne are on their honeymoon when a massive earthquake ensues. Sorenne is gravely injured, and paramedics tell Victor he must choose to save either his wife or child. Thirteen years later, Victor has lost faith in God since Sorenne's death and raises his now-adolescent daughter Angela by himself in Georgia. One day after school, Angela ventures into the woods with her Baptist best friend Katherine West to perform a séance, attempting to contact Angela's mother. The girls go missing and a three-day manhunt ensues. They are eventually found in a barn, but their conditions rapidly deteriorate, leading Victor to seek help from a woman who has experience with similar cases.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following a tragic accident in Haiti where Victor Fielding's wife was injured during an earthquake, Victor raises his daughter Angela alone in Georgia. When Angela and her friend Katherine perform a séance and go missing, they are found in a barn but begin to deteriorate physically. Victor seeks help from Chris MacNeil, an expert on exorcisms. During a ritual, Chris is blinded by Katherine. A group of religious figures—including a priest, a Baptist pastor, a Pentecostal preacher, and a rootwork healer—attempt an ecumenical exorcism. During the ritual, the demon reveals a past choice Victor made regarding his wife and child. The demon demands a choice of which girl lives. While the group struggles, the demon kills the priest. In the final moments, a choice is made, and the demon reveals that the chosen one would be the one who dies. Katherine is dragged to Hell, while Angela survives. Afterward, Angela returns to school, Chris is reunited with her daughter Regan, and Victor visits his wife's grave.
